21 Tawau students get RM1,000 for 5As
TWENTY-one 5 As students from SK Bandar Tawau and SK Bandar Tawau II received
RM1,000 each from Sebatik Assemblyman Datuk Dr Patawari Patawe, Saturday.
Last year, Dr Patawari issued a challenge to the students in his constituency that he would give RM1,000 to each if they scored 5 As in the UPSR examination since previously not even three had achieved such excellent results.
"I am proud of the achievement. It is only through education that we can get ourselves out of the poverty doldrums∆herefore I issue another challenge that if any of the students in the Sebatik constituency scoring 5 As (in the UPSR) I will give them RM1,000," said Dr Patawari in his speech.
Met later, he said the cash incentive was a motivation for the students in schools in his constituency to strive towards excellence in their education as part of the way to answer Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's call for outstanding, excellence and distinction.
Dr Patawari said the Government has a target of zero-hardcore poor and the way to achieve this was through better education for the people.
"So I think we should start early and give them a boost so that the momentum can gain in the later part of their lives as student," he said. Of the high achievers, 16 were from SK Bandar Tawau II and five from SK Bandar Tawau.
Also on hand were SK Bandar Tawau II principal Pg Omar Pg Hj Duraman, SK Bandar Tawau principal Mariamah Kuntum and Sebatik people's development officer (PKR) Kadri Ahmad.
