The History of Kubah Ria

The new Kubah Ria Complex is part of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation’s (SEDC) efforts to increase trading spaces in the city. This new complex at Jalan Matang here was developed at a cost of RM22.3mil from the Federal Government after the old site was found to be no longer suitable.

The original old Kubah Ria was built in 1983 at Rm 1.2 Millions with 59 units. With leases to the stalls expired in 2009, a redevelopment of the area was deemed necessary.

The old buildings were unsuitable for upgrading while the location was no longer safe for traders and customers due to its proximity to the main road. Hence the new complex was built on a new location opposite the old site.

Construction works commenced on 2 September 2008 and was completed on 31 July 2010 at a total cost of RM 22,383,000.

The completed new complex has 90+ shop lots and stalls for retail and food traders.

The new complex has  better facilities and amenities, including clean and orderly trading premises, public toilets, car park and open-space dining area.

The complex is managed by Sara Urusharta Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SEDC.

KUCHING: The Chief Minister of Sarawak, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud will be launching the new Kubah Ria Complex at 10.00am on 16 November 2012, Friday.

The development of Kubah Ria started as a vision of the State Government, particularly the Chief Minister of Sarawak to help and assist the local entrepreneurs through the development of suitable business premises, in the hope of encouraging them to succeed in business and entrepreneurship.

Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) was given the task to build the original Medan Niaga Kubah Ria at Jalan Matang, Kuching in 1983.It comprised 59 units of lock-up shops and became a popular eatery outlet in Kuching due to its strategic location.

With the leases to all stalls expiring in 2009, a redevelopment of the area was deemed necessary. The redevelopment took into account the desire by SEDC to continue the business activities at the site and the need to transform the area to be consistent with the fast pace development of Kuching City.

With the old site deemed unsuitable due to the rapid development, the Government identified a new site - opposite the old site for the redevelopment of Kubah Ria.The funding for the redevelopment of Kubah Ria was obtained from the then Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development (MECD) for implementation under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (RMKe-9).

The Earth Breaking Ceremony was officiated by the Chief Minister and site works commenced on 2 September 2008.The project was completed on 31 July 2010 at a total cost of RM 22,383,000.

Managed by Sara Urusharta Sdn.Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of SEDC,

the new Kompleks Kubah Ria consists of :

1) 47 units of shop lots,
2) 44 units food stalls selling various types of both local and foreign delicacies
3) Bilik Solat,
4) Public Washroom,
5) Central Atrium,
6) Waterfront
7) Open-space dining area for 500+ diners.

The project represents a major transformation from the old to the new while still retaining the beauty of Sarawak through its scenic view and spacious design.

In conjunction with the official launching, there will be many other exciting events and happenings at Kubah Ria from Friday until Sunday.

These include Burger Eating Competition, Colouring and Puzzle Contests for Children and performances such as bermukun and acoustic performances by local artistes.

“A hub for local foods under one roof”
Reviewed 2 January 2013 via mobile
Most of Kuching's favourite foods can be found in Kubah Ria which it the past catered mostly for Malay foods. The venue is much larger, cleaner and orderly and this augers well for food lovers who prefer clean dining environment. During daytime, some stalls do not operate and some cater for dinners and supper only. Amenities are in good conditions and because it's relatively new. For drivers ample parking spaces are available and for visitors, taxi services can be arranged.

Within the vicinity of Kubah Ria are the almost completed Benteng, another food court and nearby is the Medan Niaga Satok, a popular Sunday open air Market recently moved from it's old premis at Satok Road. This will make the area a central location for food stalls, fish and vegetable Market. Thus it showcases what Kuching can offer to all.

Find the best meals at Kubah Ria Baru

Most of the current stalls are mostly from the previous Kubah Ria stall owner but there are some new ones as well. Pizza Ria is available for those who loves pizza but most of the stalls serve local delicacies such as satay, the infamous mee kolok, chicken rice and laksa Sarawak. There is even a stall that serves 'ayam panggang' or roasted chicken, which reminded me of Kenny Rogers seeing that the chicken was roasted on hot charcoal.

For those who would like to have something foreign there are also western and Japanese food available. There are a total of 45 stalls here in Kubah Ria Baru.
