Our Homestay

Spheredivers is a homestay constructed within the Bajau Village on stilts.
We offer a reasonable budget for fun dives, dive courses and a more laid back way to snorkel or dive to the island surroundings such as Sipadan Island, Si Amil Island and not forgetting Mabul , home to our homestay.
On stilts, each dives are easily accessible, giving us a very flexible dive schedule to your need.
We have 6 units of twin sharing room and 1 unit triple sharing room with common shared bathrooms (3 units).Fullfilling the needs of our valued guests, we have expanded 4 more twin sharing rooms with attached bathroom for the comfort of our valued guests.
Our rooms are simple, clean and spacious enough, equipped with fans and plug points to ensure our valued guests a decent place to stay.
Its just minutes away from world's top muck diving destination for avid underwater photographers, not forgetting a very relaxing vacation for non divers and seafood lovers.
Enjoy the sunset from our sundeck and recently built watch tower. With our resident pro musicians, enjoy the 'Unplugged' session or just sit and enjoy the night covered by millions of stars not forgetting a visiting green turtle and spotted eagle ray just front of our homestay.

This homestay was a very good base for going to Sipadan and exploring the Mabul island and snorkelling.

We didn't dive with Sphere, so only reviewing the stay there.

Firstly, the food is fantastic! It is also a buffet, so you can get more. Just amazing.

The accommodation is simple, very clean and considering the rest of the island, very good for the price you pay.

The view out over the ocean is very nice, and the location gives you a pretty good view over the sunset. :-)

If we ever went back to Mabul, I think we would stay here again!

The only thing we were a bit concerned about was the walk out to the accommodation, the boards are pretty uneven and sometimes lacking, particularly in the dark. All part of the Mabul experience though I guess!

We moved here after we left Uncle Chang´s, which is a horrible place. At Sphere Divers you get what you signed up for. It is a very clean and very lovely small accomodation. The food is delicious, the staff is super friendly and helpful and the view is amazing.
We didn´t dive here, but the accomodation is definetely recommended!! Would stay again.

Good luck finding any information from this place at least bj's and uncle changs has a check in on semporna, paid spheredivers competitor to take me to the island...can't wait to see what kind of disaster spheredivers will be after this garbage. The instructions are worthless and I get its on an island with simple people but this is just stupid

“Local, friendly and incredible location!!!”

This place is an absolute gem! Ady and the staff were all amazing, and always made us feel so welcome. They even offered us free boat rides to the pier :) The living areas over the water are stunning, and perfect for lying in the hammock and watching turtles swim by all day and night. You won't find these views, sunsets, star gazing or atmosphere at the pricier places on the other side of the island (Scuba Junkie, Borneo Divers etc). Food was fantastic considering what's available on Mabul, and as mentioned before, the hospitality was amazing. While we dove with SJ, we did take a few super cheap snorkeling trips with Sphere which were great. Perhaps not the best place for meeting other Western travelers as it's popular with Malaysian/Asian divers, but it's fun to hang with the locals. Perfect if you're traveling with a group of friends (like us!) or as a couple. Beds and bathrooms definitely not fancy, but clean, bright and spacious. Highly recommended!!!

“Unbelievably Good Diving & Amazing Food”
4 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 April 2016
We spent five days staying at this wonderful homestay and diving with these folks. At first glance the property looks a bit rustic but the rough edges are more than compensated for by the wonderful things that happen while you stay there. The diving is absolutely world class. Nothing in my previous 140+ dives prepared me for the sights I'd find at Mabul. I literally lost track of the number of Nudibranchs we found over the course of seven dives. The coral was healthy, the fish were numerous, and the macro life was astonishing. Azhar leads a very well paced dive and you only feel rushed because of all there is to see in that time below. Once back on the deck the food that Adi and his crew prepare in the kitchen left us always full and very happy. We purchased some crab from the local Sea Gypsy community and let Adi have his way with it. I'd suggest doing the same; you will not be disappointed. The boat rides to the sites are short and comfortable and Azhar is very skilled at helping you set up transport to and from his spot. Can't wait to come back again. I deeply regret not having my underwater camera with me this trip due to space restrictions. I may not have the chance to see some of those critters again until I am back. Thanks, Bony, Adi, and especially thank you Azhar.

“!What a nice homestay!”

With the spheredivers you stay in a wooden Building, directly over the water.... a cool thing during hot days and a amazing location to watch the sunset!
The rooms are nicely decorated and serve all basic needs.
You get full bord menue and the food is really good, with lots of fish, chicken and vegetables, fruits....it is really tasty and not boring - even for vegetarians.
The Diving is nice and the team is really friendly and lots of fun. All in all - it was worth every penny and every minute to go and stay there.

“Best place to stay and dive at in Mabul!”

Underrated place, excellent staff & great hospitality. Food catered to your liking... our room was directly facing the sea... No complaints. Everything was perfect! Even though they didn't have wifi, but honestly you don't need it here. Stargazed every night. One night Mabul was raining shooting stars. AMAZING!!! Highly recommend!

“Best place to stay for diving in Sabah”
5 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 June 2015 via mobile
I took my open water diving licence here! The instructors there were very experience, showing us beautiful dive site. Their eyes were bionic, as they can point out the sea creature that were perfectly camouflage with the surrounding. We had a great time getting to know mother nature and take a break from city life.

This place is very relaxing even if you choose not to dive. The food (not typical hotel food but local delicacy) was delicious and abundant of seafood (buy from local). Just need to bring extra cash to buy from the local and get the in house chef to cook for you at a small cost.

The scenery was beautiful , water is crystal clear and it was totally safe as it was guarded by maritime.

“great place for chilling!”

We where there with my in-laws and husband, we all really enjoyed it, as non divers.
Be sure to call before hand, the numbers on the website aren't always working, so these are the other numbers to call Ady 0145561666, he is the owner, and May 0163287296, she is a dive instructor!
The food is really good, and for snorklers the housereef is really pretty!

“Lovely staff and an excellent place to stay”
4 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 April 2015
Very helpful staff, basic and clean accommodation. The ideal place to stay if you love snorkelling or diving and don't have the budget for the resorts. Located on stilts above the crystal clear waters of Mabul island, you will see tropical fish from the deck and maybe even a turtle. Loved it!

“Great staff, good dive holiday”
4 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 May 2014
Looking on a whim for somewhere to dive over a busy bank holiday weekend at less than cut-throat prices, I managed to find Spheredivers on a Sipadan diving website. One cool 10-minute convo later with their agent, Benjamin, on the KL-side, I had the invoice in my inbox, a room booked and the promise that a car would be waiting for me at Tawau Airport.

Sure enough, bleary eyed from the 6am flight, I was met at the airport and whisked off to the common jetty in Sempoerna (I napped all the way on the 45-minute drive). After a little confusion and waiting for the boatman to collect the daily shopping needs for the homestay, we then took our 1hr-and-a-bit speedboat ride to the homestay on Mabul Island.

The homestay has expanded since the last pictures here were posted. It appears that more dive lodges and homestays have sprung up around it (and have joined right up to it, even) and that Spheredivers themselves have added a block of rooms to the area off the sun deck. Unfortunately, I didn't really take pictures of the place... that's how preoccupied I was on my trip there!

I had a small twin-bed room to myself (extra charges on the 4D/3N package for the lone occupancy). There was a standing fan provided, which only was useful at night as electricity is only supplied between 6pm - 7am.

Not having electricity wasn't a huge issue if you're there as a diver, as you're usually out on dives from 8am-noon, then 3pm-5pm. However, there were times (after an especially tiring dive) where there was nothing I wanted more than a kip between lunch and the 3pm dive, and it was sometimes almost too hot to be in my room without the fan. The windows usually let in a nice breeze, but there were days when it was unbearably still and sticky.

Oh, and one important thing to note: no wifi. Yes, that's right. No wifi. And mobile data reception is sketchy. Be prepared to be (mostly) cut off from the world, apart from phone and SMS service. (I LOVED IT!)

Azhar and Raja were great, as were the supporting staff. Friendly (but not overly and fake-ly so) and always up for a good chat. They were awesome DMs as well, spotting the best sea creatures and timing the dives perfectly. I also took the opportunity to take my Advanced OW license while I was there, and I have nothing but awesome things to say of Raja as my Instructor.

The diving in Mabul is AWESOME. You want turtles galore? Then you want to dive in Mabul. I saw so many that I stopped keeping count.

All in all, I had an excellent time. The place might not be the best for non-divers as there really isn't much to do if you're not away spending the bulk of your daytime in the water (although the waters around the resort are gorgeously crystal clear and is perfect for snorkelling when the tide is in) but if I decide to dive in Mabul again, Spheredivers will definitely be my go-to.

(I have to make special mention here of the impeccable service received by Benjamin throughout my journey there. As a solo traveller, he would intermittently send messages to check in on me, until I arrived safely at the homestay and transferred to the care of Azhar and Raja. Excellent fellow, excellent service all around!)

Room Tip: Rooms along the sundeck tend to bake a little in the day. Ask for rooms along the inside of the home...
