Ministry of Science and Innovation  through the National Oceanography Directorate had allocated RM1.2mil to fund six research and development projects at Marudu Bay, including the UPM study which commenced last year.

The marine park would ensure sustainable development of the marine resources there.

Tun Mustapha Marine Park covers the coastal areas of Kudat, Kota Marudu and Pitas districts including 50 islands. Priority Conservation Area in Malaysia.

Tun Mustapha Marine Park is the largest marine conservation area in Malaysia. 80,000 over people live within its vicinity and depend on fishery resources for their livelihood.

Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) researchers recently completed a study to find ways to sustainable develop the area.

The study was discussed at a seminar conducted by the ministry’s National Oceanography Directorate for stakeholder in the northern town of Kudat.

There are 10 new business opportunities for the park including :

1) green tourism,

2) homestays,

3) aquaculture,

4) sea cucumber and cage fish rearing,

5) oyster breeding,

6) sea transportation,

7) mangrove boardwalks and

8) bird observatories
