16th March 2018 Friday

The two Politeknik Sarawak students missing at Taman Bukit Tawau on 16th March 2018 Friday were found safe the next day. Found tired with injured feet and fever, they were sent to the hospital for treatment.

1- Muhd Khairul Siwwes, 21, was found by villagers at Mini Hydro Kg Gudang Empat at 11.30am, four kilometres from the park office.
2- Hafizam Abdawah, 21, was found in the Mt Maria area by rescue team at 3.19pm, 12.2km away from park office.

This was their 5th times to the park.
For the previous four times they inform their intented location of going to park guide before entering the forest.
But this 5th time they went into the forest by themself.
The search operation started at 8.30am on Saturday with 12 firelighters, 11 police and 30 Park rangers.

This is what happened :

The two were conducting research on healthy trees in Tawau Hills Park for a tree house project, as part of their practical training. On 16th March 2018, they went to the park for the 5th time.

Khairul and Hafizam took off at 9am on that Friday to the hot spring area in search of a suitable tree for their tree house project. They followed red and white rope indicators but some of ropes indicators were cut off so they continued their journey up till a hilly area.

On the hill,  Hafizam's feet was cramped but they continue walking as it was getting dark. Khairul continued walking ahead for 100 metres to check out the road ahead but when he returned to look for Hafizam, he was missing.

Khairul searched for the missing Hafizam for half an hour, repeatedly calling out his name but he did not respond. Without Hafizam, Khairul alone continue to search the way out of the forest until night time, in which he found a river and slept on a rock there.

Woke up at about six in the morning the next day (Saturday), Khairul walked for five hours before coming across a wooden house near Mini Hydro Kg Gudang Empat. The villagers  provided food for him and contacted the authorities. Search team arrive soon to fetch him.
