Tuaran Crocodile Farm

16th March 2009 Monday

This was a male salt water crocodile. (Photo above) Shot dead at age 60 years old. When alive was 2200 pounds 19 feet. Was shot at Sandakan Kinabatangan River in 2003 by the villagers for eating one of them.

This male crocodile was made into a staffed spaceman for displayed at Tuaran Crocodile Farm and immediately become a hot photographic model for visitors.

Together with this stuffed killer crocodile also few other crocodiles that has been stuffed and waxed for display purposed in the show house next to the entrance.

...and this former killer crocodile now become a popular attraction of happy children.

A lady farmer brought a young crocodile out so that every one could pet it.

The young crocodile is the only live crocodile that not kept inside the cage but became a crocodile pet to the visiting public especially the children,

Take the opportunity to feel how’s a crocodile skin like. Don’t worry the crocodile big mouth which has been sealed with tap.

Wet and hard ? No. For the first time, I realized crocodile skin is soft and a warm gentle feeling (even thought this reptile is cool blooded)

Almost all the crocodiles were so stationary that it looked like dead or dummy crocodiles.

This is crocodile farm where they raised crocs for the skin that made into purses and bags.

Here are crocodile  souvenirs for bringing  home. Crocodile meat, crocodile eggs at RM2 each) and crocodile skin products are for sale.

A stand sells crocodile meat. Crocodile  meat and eggs, they say,  are good for those suffering from asthma. Available also dried croc gallbladders in the display cabinet.

The souvenir  shop sell crocodiles product such as wallet, belt and purse.

This crocodile adventure land  was definitely worth our time! Yin, especially, had a super crocodile time!

Crocodiles have to be separated according to sizes because they are cannibals and would eat the smaller ones when hungry.

In  National Geographic documentary we watched young helpless crocodiles were eaten up by adult crocodiles while their mother was away.

The Tuaran Crocodile Farm is promoted in tourists as a Crocodile Adventure Land as part of Sabah adventure. It gives the visitor an experience with real life crocodiles. There are also crocodile farms in Thailand, Indonesia and Australia.

The shop sell all sorts of crocodile  merchandise such as crocodile meat, crocodile eggs, crocodile oil .

We saw crocodile in various stages of development. The farmed crocodile are kept to 3 to 4 years old. After that age, even though not yet in full size, the skin begins to get too thick and hard and loses its vibrant colors.

We walked through the various enclosures. An fully grown old males can weigh 3,000 pounds at over 20 feet long!  Out of the so many crocodile, we saw only one that match this size and length.

We saw some of these monsters laying out in the sun. Some of the enclosures appeared to be empty, but then the crocodile  would appear out of the murky water  (and only a chain link fence separated us).

Some of the enclosures only housed a few while a couple others had large areas teeming with crocodiles.

One section of the park contained lizard while snake enclosures provided additional variety.

Visitor can buy a bunch of kangkung vegetable at RM1
to feed a hungry deer or the other animals.

These 'approved' animal feeds i.e. the vegetables, fish and  turtle foods are hung on a wooden board along a small money box for you to deposit your payment. A smart self-service from the management.

Yin is testing her skills on this FREE Fishing pond. There are school of small fishes good in escaping and hiding.

we also got to see pythons, an ostrich, a peacock, noisy gobbling turkeys, slimy looking catfish, fat monitor lizards, mini chicken (Japanese chicken).

A bisexual crocodile.

Today he is imprisoned in this cage for us to see.

According to the description board, he is 3,000 pounds (is he that heavy ???).

I hope this is not a mistake. If the data is correct then this is the heavies crocodile ever caught in Malaysian records.

Finally its crocodile show time. Adult may not find interesting in the show. But for children especially children first time to come encounter with real crocodiles like Yin, the show is a trill to them.

Crocodile show time  twice a day from Monday to Saturday (at 11.00am and 3.00pm) and additional show at 1.00pm on Sundays.

Crocodiles are not in the mood for the show, they never are. Crocodile are not born actors like some other animals such as monkey.

The crocodile show including  brushing crocodile teeth, laying flat on top of a crocodile, sticking hand down in crocodile's mouth, kissing the crocodile's lip  and off course dancing with a crocodile.

This crocodile farm  is a private farm. How was the farm started ? This crocodile story started with a boy Chai Yau Look:

"....My father was a fishmonger back then and many of the wholesalers would give baby crocodiles caught in their fishing nets to my father for free. At first I was afraid of the reptile. I usually released them back into wild but then the fishermen would always come back with other baby crocodiles and eventually I started to rear 70 of them and fed them with rotten fishes....." Chai told Daily Express reports his story in 2005

Chai asked his father for some money to build a pond for the crocodiles but was turned down.

He turned to a friend for RM500, a lot of money back then.

After four years, a Singaporean friend came to Sandakan and saw the crocodiles in the pond. The businessman told  Chai that he would buy the crocodile skins when slaughtering.

Chai earned RM1,000 from his first sale and made him realize that he could turn his passion for crocodiles into a lucrative business.............
