EPP 8 : SEA CUCUMBER AND TIGER GROUPER COMBINE CULTURE


Key outcomes of the EPP

   
• Fish production 12,600 tones & Sea Cucumber production 2,304 tones.
• Achieve consistent survival rate of over 70%
• Create a minimum 930 job opportunities
• Improve skill level of local workers – especially in handling and husbandry
• Maintain a minimum 50% of total output for local consumption
• Achieve local and international quality certification – ASC, SPLAM & others
   
 

What needs to be done?

 
  • Allocation of land at proposed project site
• Support of government / private financial institution
• Continuous training of local workers to improve handling and husbandry skills
• Improvement in basic infrastructure (roads, piped water, electricity)
 
 

Key Challenges

 
  • Small scaled production & located far from processing facility
• Low production volumes & low quality produce
• Availability / formulation of sustainable fish feed
• Maintain water quality at major rivers / coastal areas
• Improved air connectivity to major consuming market (in terms of loads & frequency)
 
   

Mitigation Plan

    • Engage UMS / feed mills to formulate sustainable feed & local food processors / slaughter houses for purchase their meat refuse
• Laboratory to test water quality before discharging into grow-out ponds
• Upgrade of air-cargo facility to utilize live fish export containers – enable to carry higher volume (500kg vs 5kg)
• Setup in-house grow out farms

• Contract buyback price RM40/kg
• Annual alternative income RM36,000 (RM3,000 per month3 participants 1st year
