 CHEDI  LUANG

This impressive brick chedi was the oldest building in Wat Chedi Luang. Constructed in a combination of brick and laterite and once towering a height 90 meters  (295 feet). It collapsed during an earthquake in 1545.

The ruined we see today is an massive base (photo above)

The history began in 1401 with the erection of a small chedi in memory of San Muang Ma, who died in that year. This was later enlarged, first by his widow and then again by King Tiloka his grandson  Fine elephant heads and carvings of Buddha can still be seen in the niches.

The pagoda at Bodh Gaya in India being taken as a model for the chedi.

Guarding the entrance to the large wiharn are two magnificent rhinoceros-nosed serpents, their scales made out of brightly glazed tiles. Some small statues and some elaborately carved elephant tusks, the wiharn contains three bronze statues of Buddha cast in 1440.

Reclining Buddha
Reclining Buddha or Pha Buddhasaiyat is an old Buddha status. It is believed to have been built during the reign of Phra Muang Kaeo, the 11th monarch of Mang Rai Dynasty (1487-1517). The head reclines toward the south and faces the Grand Pagoda. It measures 1.93 meters high and 870 meters long, enshrined in a new pavilion built in 1955 when Ven. Phra Buddhisophon was the abbot.
