5,500 species have been described and they are distributed from the tropics, where the greatest numbers and diversity occur, to the tree-line in polar regions

Anisozygoptera is represented by two species, one in Himalaya Mountains and another species in Japan- although only one family is now living, fossil evidence of 10 extinct families indicates considerable early diversity within this suborder
