Malaysia’s Only Columnar Basalt – A Geological Masterpiece
The Columnar Basalt of Kg Balung Cocos, located in Tawau, Sabah, is the only confirmed columnar basalt formation in Malaysia. Formed approximately 27,000 years ago by volcanic activity from Mount Maria, this rare geological site represents an irreplaceable part of Malaysia’s natural heritage.
This pitch seeks NGO collaboration and support to advance heritage recognition, conservation planning, community engagement, and sustainable geo-tourism development at the site.
National Rarity
No other known columnar basalt formation exists in Malaysia, making this site
geologically unique at a national level.
Scientific Value
The basalt columns — measuring 30–40 cm in diameter and
extending along a 100-metre stretch of the Balung River —
provide clear evidence of Quaternary volcanic processes in the
Tawau–Semporna region.
Educational Importance
The site functions as a natural outdoor classroom for:
Cultural Context
The site is located within Kg Balung Cocos, home to the
Cocos Malay community, whose local names (Batu Bersusun /
Giram Nek Legek) reflect long-standing cultural ties to the landscape.
Although the site remains largely intact, it faces several emerging challenges:
