KIRTI MUKHA

This is a monster with protruding eyes, fierce fangs and teeth. This seen on arches behind deities and also on the waist band.

The word means the face of glory. Originating from the matted hairs of Lord Shiva this monster started devouring Rahu an emissary of Asura by name Jalandhara who fell in love with Parvati.

Rahu was pardoned as he begged Lord Shiva and the monster could not satisfy its hunger. on Shiva telling it started devouring its own body till the head.

KIRTI MUKHA is sometimes mistaken as Mahakala

Mahakala is a name of Shiva. It is also a name of one of his principal attendants along with Nandi, which is one of Shiva's watchmen, and so is often represented outside the main doorway of early North Indian temples.

Mahakala is also having a terrifying appearance, but is as compassionate as God and the protector of the faithful.

To All Our Dear And Valued Members, Devotees, Donors And Well Wishers

Maha Kumba Abishegam Fund Raising

On behalf of the Tawau Indian Hindu Temple Association, the Management Committee is pleased to advise that the Temple renovation for the Maha Kumba Abishegam or consecration of the Temple is progressing very well indeed.

We saw the arrival of the much awaited specialized sculptors from India and they commenced work immediately on 1st May 2012. The work is expected to continue for another 3 months and we will subsequently commence preparatory work for the grand occasion of Maha Kumba Abishegam which is expected sometime in the 3rd Quarter of 2012.

For the benefit of those who may not be aware, the Maha Kumba Abishegam is a religious order which every Temple has to undertake every 12 years. Prior to the Maha Kumba Abishegam, the Temple would have to undergo reconstruction, major upgrading or renovation as deemed appropriate as the Temple would have to last another 12 years before the next Maha Kumba Abishegam.

Maha Kumba Abishegam in itself is a sacred grand occasion during which 48 days of prayers are held to consecrate the Temple.

For our Thirumurugan Temple in Tawau, we are undertaking renovation and extension works which is estimated to cost between RM 600,000 to RM 700,000 and this includes amongst others, the cost of hiring specialized sculptors from India.

To-date we have completed the civil and structural works and the initial sculpting works have already commenced.

During the Thaipusam this year, we carried-out our usual fund raising. However, the amount raised is not adequate as the total expenditure for the renovation is very substantial. We are now therefore intensifying our efforts to raise additional funds for the renovation and extension works.

Accordingly, we are again seeking every individual and corporate donors to come forward with your kindness and generosity which you have been continuously doing without fail. Your every single contribution is valuable and be rest assured that the Lord will be aware of your kind deeds and His Blessings will always be with you.

All contributions are to be addressed to "Tawau Indian Hindu Temple Association" and this will be validated with an official receipt of the Association. The names of all donors together with their respective amount would be published in the Association's Annual Report.

We look forward to your generosity and thank you in anticipation of your kind deeds and support.

"May the Lord's Blessings be with you always"

In the Lord's name, we serve.

Thank you.

This oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur was started in 1873 by the Pillai family as a private shrine. In the late 1920s the Pillai family open the temple doors to the public and eventually handed the management over to a board of trustees. The initial temple structure was build in attap and gone through structural upgrade throughout the years. The current temple building completed in 1968. The impressive gateway to the temple (the gopuram) was completed in 1972. The new temple was consecrated in 1973.
