International University College of Nursing (IUCN)
Background of University
The first nursing university in the world, International University College
of Nursing (IUCN) was established on 26 February 2008.
As the first nursing university, IUCN has introduced a first-of-its-kind
Nursing Foundation programme where a student can pursue a nursing degree at
IUCN after completing SPM with 5 credits. *
The demand for nursing degree holders is increasing tremendously not only in
Malaysia but throughout the world.
In Malaysia, the current percentage of nurses with a basic degree stands at
only 2% among all Registered Nurses (RN). The Ministry of Health Malaysia
aims to upgrade all RNs to degree level in 10 years. The total number of RNs
without a degree is approximately 60,000. The current Malaysian nurse to
population ratio is 1:529 and the targeted ratio of the Ministry of Health
is 1:200 (WHO ratio).
IUCN was set up to address these issues and further position Malaysia as a
nursing science education hub. IUCN’s main campus is located in Bandar Sri
Sendayan, Seremban and is targeting 5,000 students when it opens for
registration in January 2011.
According to Mr. Summugam Ramasamy, Executive Chairman of IUCN, “It is our
mission to make Malaysia the nursing hub of the world. IUCN’s main campus
will be able to accommodate 20,000 students where the focus on international
to local student ratio will be 60% to 40%. We are confident that we will
achieve our mission as the location for the campus is exceptional - being in
close proximity to the city center - and our experience in setting up and
operating a Nursing and Allied Health College in the past and the support we
are receiving for our project from the public and private sector will ensure
a truly worldclass university for nursing.” He also stated that Malaysia is
matured enough to host a university dedicated to nursing science education.
