The National University of Malaysia (NUM Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia UKM)
is a public university located in Bangi, Selangor which is about 35 km south of
Kuala Lumpur.
Its teaching hospital, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC)
Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (PPUKM) is located in Cheras and
also has a branch campus in Kuala Lumpur.
Currently there are 17,500 undergraduate students enrolled, and 5,105
postgraduate students of which 1368 are foreign students from 35 different
countries.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia is one of the five research universities in
Malaysia. It was ranked by The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) at
number 185 in its annual ranking of the world's top 200 universities for
2006.[3]
Best University in Malaysia
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia ranks 87th in Times Higher Education Asia
rankings in 2013
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) made it in the top 100 of the inaugural
Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings.
It is ranked 87th tying up with the American University of Beirut in Lebanon.
The ranking exercise benchmarks the public university with other research
intensive institutions in the region. Six hundred sixty-five universities took
part in this exercise.
In 2012 , UKM ranked 98th in the Top 100 Universities under 50 category. Times
Higher Education rankings used 13 separate performance indicators to examine
each universitys strength against all its core missions namely teaching,
research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
UNIVERSITI Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), established 42 years ago, was the only
Malaysian tertiary institution in the table, which lists the world's best 100
universities established in the last 50 years.
UKM staff members' hard work and dedication now stands among "young universities
that are making huge strides in educational development".
UKM stressed on quality research and publications, innovative teaching and
learning, community engagement, internationalization and international
benchmarking, good governance and effective delivery.
Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 was a collaboration between British magazine
Times Higher Education (THE) and research-metrics company Thomson Reuters and
released in addition to the yearly World University Rankings.
It was based on the same comprehensive range of 13 separate performance
indicators -- including research, teaching, knowledge transfer and international
activity -- used to compile the World University Rankings.
UKM's presence in the league table will "encourage other Malaysian institutions
to recognize the importance of benchmarking themselves against global
counterparts".
UKM, on the other hand, viewed such exercises as a guide to help it improve in
specific areas such as publications and citations.

The Education Ordinance of Malaysia was passed by
parliament when the country gained its independence in 1957.
The main thrust of the new education policy was to create a
single national education system with the final aim of using
Bahasa Malaysia, the national language as the main medium of
instruction. The overriding factor was that the national
language would be the catalyst for forging national unity.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM as it is popularly known) was formally established on 18 May 1970, UKM is the third university in Malaysia, but the first to use Bahasa Malaysia as its medium of instruction.
UKM is one of four research universities in Malaysia. UKM
has setup numerous research institutes to accelerate
research in new areas, On 28 April 2005, the Prime Minister
of Malaysia, The Right Honorable Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad
Badawi launched the Malaysia Genome Institute at UKM, The
placement of the national institute in UKM signifies the
research strength of the university in the area of genomics
and molecular biology,
National language is the main language in UKM, however the
university has come up with strategies to encourage students
to enhance their proficiency in English as well as other
major foreign languages such as French, German, Arabic,
Mandarin. Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Thai and many others,
Beginning 2003 all science and mathematics based courses are
taught in English in line with the new Malaysian
government's policy.
UKM's globalize mission is to promote the national identity
beyond the shores of the country. UKM, though a brainchild
of nationalistic fervor and aspirations, is very
international in its outlook without sacrificing its
cherished culture and values, UKM is proud to be ranked in
