UMS Museum The Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Museum
nestled on the ground floor of the Chancellory
Building, is an immediate invitation and
attraction that excudes rich ambience.
Its
grandiose and contemporary setting epitomizes a
decade of the University’s progress towards
excellence.
Officially launched on the 25th of
October, 2003, the UMS Museum was the brainchild
of the first and present Vice Chancellor, Tan
Sri Prof. Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Abu Hassan
Othman, whose unrelenting dedication and
unsurpassed contribution has seen the University
through multiple stages of development.
The main entrance of the Museum is adorned by
meaningful verses of a poem, “Griya Citra” that
embodies the path taken by UMS in its quest
towards realizing its mission and vision as a
landmark of both national and global eminence.
In the interior of the Museum, finely designed
and carved wooden showcase accompanied with
interactive multimedia touch screens are
illuminated by the complementary effect of
brightly lit lights and exquisite regal red
carpet.
Aesthetic arrangement of memorabilia,
most noticeably the University Mace, adds to splendour and magnificence of the Museum.
The purpose of the Museum is reflected through
the modest but invaluable collection of exhibits
and artifacts that is histories as well as
symbolic to UMS. It is a portrayal of the
efforts, contribution and sacrifices made
throughout the years by various authorities and
individuals. From the numerous photographs,
displayed, historically momentous events in the
likes of the auspicious “Beaufort Gathering” the
official launching ceremony by the former Prime
Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamad,
the many stages of infrastructural development,
the inaugural and subsequent convocations as
well as the royal commemorative convocation
ceremony, exult expansion of the University as
an icon of socioeconomics and educational
advancement in the State of Sabah. On a similar
mode, exhibits such as the portraits of the
founding members and significant individual,
mementos and a vast array of other displays
including the detailed scale model of the
University Campus, graduation/ academic gowns,
and congratulatory salutations from
internationally renowned institutions of higher
learning, personify every phase of progress and
development of the University, from the
beginning to the present day.
Apart from charting the decade-long achievements
of the University, the Museum serves to instill
a sense of belonging and pride, not only amongst
the campus community, but also the people of
Sabah and Malaysia as whole. It is established
to inspire and cultivate values of excellences
for the intellectual, spiritual and emotional
benefits of the future generations. True to the
role of UMS as a university of the people, by
people, for the people, the UMS Museum
symbolizes the University’s spirit of
excellence, soul of existence, voice of
conscience, source of aspiration, and life
within its walls.
