Papar District
Papar district covers an area of 1,243 square km.
Papar is 38 kms south of Kota Kinabalu and is situated right at the bank of the
Papar river.
This agricultural district has a huge area of rice fields and tropical fruits
orchards. It has also a strong fishing community. The population is about
108,000.
Papar is one of the stops on the British North Borneo 140 kms railway line from
Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu) to the interior town of Tenom.
This railway line was established back in the late 1880s and train services had
been operating since then with a brift closed April 2006 for upgrading work.
Agriculture is the main economic activity of Papar mainly concentrated on paddy
cultivation. No big plantations are found in Papar. Forestry is another economic
activity with timber mills in Kimanis.
Papar is dubbed ‘the Rice Bowl of Sabah’, the agricultural town of Papar is
situated 38.5 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu.
Journey from Kota Kinabalu to reach Papar takes approximately 45 minutes to 1
hour by car and 1 hour and 30 minutes by train.
The main attraction in Papar would be its tamu (Sunday market) which offers a
wide variety of juicy local fruits, unique Sabahan handicrafts, fresh
vegetables, fish, and many more.
There are still a number of old wooden shop blocks in Papar town.

On the left is one the almost 100 years old tree planted during the British
colony time.
This one in front is a tall oil palm tree about 50 years old.
Papar is a small town 38 kilometers south of Kota Kinabalu City.
The journey takes 1 hour by car from Kota Kinabalu.
The shops are a mixed of old and new.
These old wooden shops are Colonial-era shop lots.
It is one of the main stops on the North Borneo Railway.
The town is beside the Papar River not far from the sea.
On the left is the Central Market (yellow building)
Turning to the right is the Railway Station
Try the "Tarap" fruit which is unique fruit found only in Northern Borneo.
On the left this particular green wooden block of old shop lot is Papar history
heritage.
Arriving at this round about, you are out of the town and entering the Federal
Route.
Follow this Pan-Borneo Highway to Kimanis, Beaufort and Sipitang and finally
entering the State of Sarawak at Sindumin Town
