SEDC's Hotel RM10.6 Million Renovation, Part Of Rebranding Exercise

KUCHING, March 19, 2010 (Bernama) -- The Grand Margherita Hotel, formerly known as Holiday Inn Kuching, is undergoing a RM10.6 million renovation which will be completed in May.

The renovation is part of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC)'s overall plan to upgrade its tourism flagship properties.

"Rebranding from an internationally-recognised brand to a local and home-grown brand is indeed a very challenging move on the part of SEDC," said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan at a ceremony to celebrate the completion of phase one of the hotel's RM3.7 million makeover.

He said the rebranding was a global trend as industry players took on new identities to keep up with customers' needs and expectation.

Chan said the private sector's growing confidence in Sarawak's tourism industry augured well with the government's policy to spur its growth.

Tourism projects currently initiated by SEDC included the Damai Bay Bazaar, tourism facilities in Damai, upgrading of Kuching Waterfront, reburbishment of the Sarawak Cultural Village and improvements to Matang Family Park.
