North Borneo Hotel has an glorious era in the last century. So as Marco Polo Hotel and Hotel Emas and many other old batch of hotels in the old town center that bloom during the Timber Era in the 1970.
Since this new century began, a new batch of cleaner, smaller yet smarter accommodation in the New Town Center gradually taken over the hospitality business of Tawau. How? By the present trance of "Now every can stay" (Low Cost) and "Now every one can book from their own computer" (Online Booking) and "Thank you for not-smoking" (Cleaner hotel environment)
Nevertheless, the old hotels in the old town center are still favorite accommodations of the local when they are in town overnight. The old town center still have many of these hotels where they can smoke any where they like, any time they like, smoke the whole night through in the rooms. The local economy stable enough too keep these old timer hotels running for another decade or two.
NON SMOKING ROOMS
Always ask for a non-smoking rooms. Air-conditioning is not strong enough to overcome the strong stink of those cheap local tobacco smuggled from the Sulu Seas.
Though slightly cheaper, a standard room is usually unbearable breathing-unfriendly. The local smoke non-stop the whole night through in their rooms. Another fact that encourage the local to smoke generously is also the "Now every one can smoke" cheap local cigarettes from Indonesia that is 1/10 of the price of the imported brand cigarettes. Some students depending on school to supply free text-books yet have pocket money enough to buy daily local cigarettes.
