Sabah Rhinos 3-1 victory over Negeri Sembilan NAZA
in Malaysia Cup quarter-finals 15 August 2007
15th August 2007 Wednesday   Tawau Sports Complex

It was a treat for Tawau football fans when Sabah Rhinos football team  faced  Negeri Sembilan NAZA in a do-or-die battle on 15th August 2007 Wednesday. This is one of the biggest matches being held in Tawau District. A match that is not to be missed  among the football fans in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak  and surrounding areas, as this is a rare chance for them to see a match of this level being held outside Kota Kinabalu.

The match was played at the newly completed Tawau Sports Complex field.

Around 15,000 football fans of this region response to the move by the Sabah FA President Datuk Anifah Aman in urging the football fans in the district to come out in full force to witness this historical event in Tawau District.

Tawau district's first ultra-modern sports complex at North Road is scheduled to open in 2007.

But a lot of money is needed to repairs the Tawau Sports Complex before it could be officially opened. Cracks already appeared on the building, coupled with lack of sporting equipment that should have been supplied by the contractor.

This complex was funded RM70 million by Malaysia Federal government as a recognition of  Tawau's years of impressive achievements in the development and promotion of various sports.

The idea of building a good complex here was during Berjaya Government 20 years ago but remained a pipe-dream because the potential areas earmarked including part of the army Kukusan Camp could not be obtained. Finally a suitable piece of land in the then BAL Plantation was secured and the Barisan BN Government moved in to implement the project.

On May 23, 1994  former Governor, Tun Datuk Haji Sakaran Dandai performed the ground breaking ceremony for this complex project. The project took off 10 years later through the initiative Datuk Haji Taufik bin Datuk Abu Bakar Titingan, an Assistant Minister in the present Cabinet.

The main stadium is the centre of attraction of the complex which has adequate seating capacity to accommodate a large number of spectators, a standard football field inside the 400 meter running track and all the necessary facilities for field events.

A spacious indoor stadium for games such as basketball, volleyball, badminton and other games will provide comfort and competitive feelings to the participants.

Hockey, being one of the eight core games earmarked for intensive development by the Federal Sports Ministry through its progressive-minded National Sports Council will have its own modern stadium with almost all essential equipment and facilities and sufficient seating capacity as well as rooms for administration, conferences and medical purposes.
