Two Sarawak Politeknik Students Lost and
Found in Forest Park

The two Politeknik Sarawak students missing at
Taman Bukit Tawau on 16th
March 2018 Friday were found safe the next day. Found tired with injured feet
and fever, they were sent to the hospital for treatment.
1- Muhd Khairul Siwwes, 21, was found by villagers at Mini Hydro Kg Gudang Empat
at 11.30am, four kilometres from the park office.
2- Hafizam Abdawah, 21, was found in the Mt Maria area by rescue team at 3.19pm,
12.2km away from park office.
This was their 5th times to the park.
For the previous four times they inform their intented location of going to park
guide before entering the forest.
But this 5th time they went into the forest by themself.
The search operation started at 8.30am on Saturday with 12 firelighters, 11
police and 30 Park rangers.
This is what happened :
The two were conducting research on healthy
trees in Tawau Hills Park for a tree house project, as part of their practical
training. On 16th March 2018, they went to the park for the 5th time.
Khairul and Hafizam took off at 9am on that
Friday to the hot spring area in search of a suitable tree for their tree house
project. They followed red and white rope indicators but some of ropes
indicators were cut off so they continued their journey up till a hilly area.
On the hill, Hafizam's feet was cramped but they continue walking as it
was getting dark. Khairul continued walking ahead for 100 metres to check out
the road ahead but when he returned to look for Hafizam, he was missing.
Khairul searched for the missing Hafizam
for half an hour, repeatedly calling out his name but he did not respond.
Without Hafizam, Khairul alone continue to search the way out of the forest
until night time, in which he found a river and slept on a rock there.
Woke up at about six in the morning the next day (Saturday), Khairul walked for
five hours before coming across a wooden house near Mini Hydro Kg Gudang Empat.
The villagers provided food for him and contacted the authorities. Search
team arrive soon to fetch him.
Sarawak government has high
expectations for Polytechnic Kuching to be one of the main technical
institutions that can produce and supply semi-professional workforce
to meet the needs of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewal Energy (SCORE)
mega project by the year 2030.
Over the years, Polytechnic Kuching had shown an excellent good
track record in the context of producing graduates to meet all the
employers’ needs and requirements.
Programmes currently offered at Polytechnic Kuching, filled the need
of semi-professional and technical manpower needed for Sarawak.

Department of Commerce,
Technology & Communications Department.
By 2012, Polytechnic Kuching has produced 18,805 graduates with
certificates and diplomas in various fields.
As more highly skilled human workforce is needed to fill the various
vacancies in SCORE.
1.5 million job opportunities that will be created and offered in
Sarawak with 52 per cent of the portion to be centralised in SCORE
alone. Out of which 70,000 of the jobs offered are for those with
the technical and engineering fields.
Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak (PKS)
is producing skilled workers for Sarawak’s technical industry. This
institution has braced itself to provide the workforce needed in the
Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).
By 2020, Malaysia would require 1.3
million skill workers from the technical and vocational fields.
Out of these workers, 700,000 diploma holders are required.
Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak (PKS) graduates would be much
sought-after as they had vast knowledge and hands-on experience in
various fields such as engineering, petrochemical, business, and
information technology.
The general perception of technical
and vocational studies as “the second choice of education” was fast
fading.
, he urged them to be more creative, innovative and sensitive
towards global technological advancements.
Over the years, PKS have produced 18,805 certificate and diploma
holders, as an important chain to ensure Malaysia’s dream of
achieving vision 2020 is realized.

Politeknik Kuching offer
only diplomas and certificates at the present. No degree courses
available yet.
Polytechnic
Education Department had an understanding with local universities
to reserve 20% of their seats for the polytechnic’s graduates.

There are 6 blocks boys hostels and 2 blocks girls hostels
Semester
students are offered to the hostel, while the second semester of the
student, they must apply each semester.
Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak has six blocks of boys hostel. Each block has:
a. 26 rooms each level,
b. 2 people per room,
c. There are 4 levels of each block,
d. Each block can accommodate a total of 208 students. ( 6 blocks
can accommodate a total of
1248 male students)
Services provided are free electricity, free water.
Student pay only RM60 fee for one
semester.
