MT. CONER TOURISM HUB, SEMPORNA
DESCRIPTION
Semporna is the gateway to the beautiful
tropical islands, amazing coral reefs, crystal
clear blue water, fascinating marine habitats,
and the world famous dive site at Sipadan
Island. There is a need to establish Mt. Coner
Tourism Hub at mainland Semporna to provide
international standard accommodation,
infrastructure, hospitality facilities and services,
connecting to central logistics support (road,
sea, and air), tailored adventure holiday
packages, and on top of all to oversee the needs
of the diverse tourists
The Mt. Coner Tourism Hub envision a satellite
town exclusively zoned for tourists seeking safe
and quality vacation in Sabah
100 acres private land
15-20 minutes to Semporna town; accessible by
road and sea.
The Hub where tourist can plan to visit any of
the 4 destinations:
Islands, Coral Reefs & Dive Sports Adventures
Wetland Adventures
Rainforest Adventures (Maliau Basin, Danum
Valley, Tabin Wildlife)
Mini Conservation Parks (in the hub)
Key OUTCOMES OF THE EPP/ KPIS
A new satellite town exclusive for tourists, 100
acres has been identified at the Main Land
Semporna that can accommodate and retain
larger group of tourists at any point of time.
Double tourist arrivals by 2020 targeting
family group and professionals. The average
annual tourists (i.e. divers) arrival in the State
is about 43,000.
Increase tourist spending at the Hub to an
average RM8,000.00 per trip by 2020.
Increase average length of stay to 6D5N and
for foreign yacht to 1 month by 2020.
Create about 2,000 job opportunities in semiskilled
and low-skilled jobs.
Create business opportunities for local
entrepreneurs in the provision of fresh foods,
seafood, fruits, handicrafts, cultural dance and
exhibitions, and others.
Create conservation block (research and
development) in the Hub.
KEY CHALLENGES
Apply Seafront Land of 200 acres from the
State Government.
Development at wetland and seafront.
Disposal of solid and non solid waste from
flowing/getting into the sea.
Maintain full Security alert at all time.
Licenses to Operate to operate Helicopter
Services, Marina Club and Cruise Terminal
Conservation
Maintain Quality Service on all services
rendered at the Hub.
Marketing & Promotion targeted at family
group and professionals.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?
A proper development plan for the land with
endorsement obtained from the Majlis Daerah
Semporna and District Office.
Aggressive marketing and promotion in and
outside the country.
The Hub will ensure all accommodation
facilities and various services offered in the
Hub are of international standards.
The Hub will engaged qualified trainer in
the hotel and services industry to conduct
continuous training for the workers in the Hub
to upkeep highest standard of service.
Occasionally a community dialog with the
heads of the local community and local
entrepreneurs to explain the role and
existence of the Hub.
Championing the course for conservation;
coral reef, wetland and rainforest.
MITIGATION PLAN
To present a strong proposal and request
to the District Office for the application of
government land and if titled land, a request
for acquisition/purchase.
To conduct EIA and soil study for all
developments at wetland and seafront.
To engage consultant to work with internal
team and to propose effective ways to manage
the disposal of solid and non solid waste
generated form the Hub.
A police base to be set up at the Hub. All
security personnel will undergo PDRM basic
police training.
The Hub will register its membership with STPC and MTB to gain access into their
marketing and promotion networking world
wide.
