RM10 million facelift for Tawau town

Tawau Municipal Council (TMC) is  working closely with Tawau district landscape department in beautifying Tawau town with a budget of RM10 million.

The landscape project ranging from  from the council field heading towards Jalan Pesisiran (Sabindo highway) to TMC building. This project will include street lights and decorative lights maintenance, and installations.

The decorative lights would be lit on festive days or special occasions.

The Tawau Municipal Council is a part of the government to handle various developments activities. The council also involves in town planning, town beautification, local affairs and many more. Previously a district council, the council was later then upgraded to a town council as the town's population exceeded 100,000.

The town council previously aimed Tawau to achieve city status in year 2005. This plan is now postpone to uncertain date.

TMC News
Tawau Municipal Council (TMC) launched "TMC News" in July 2010, a bulletin aimed at channelling information on the Council latest developments and activities to the public.
TMC News is published four times a year. The 34-page bulletin are distributed to schools and the library.

The role and the authority of the Tawau Municipal Council should not be undermined or insulted.

The commencement of the RM419 million Malaysian geothermal power plant with a capacity of 130MW here without seeking approval from the Tawau Municipal Council is again evidence of arrogance displayed by the Federal Ministry or authority, said Tawau MP Datuk Chua Soon Bui.

She said the project might have been approved by the Federal ministry or by higher authority, but the role and the authority of the TMC should not be undermined or insulted.

"It is time that the Federal authorities learn to respect the local authorities before any major project is to be implemented,"
Tawau MP Datuk Chua Soon Bui.

Determination of Tawau Municipal Council to turn dirty Tawau into a "clean city".

Starting 1st January 2009, Tawau Municipal Council organized various anti-litterbug campaigns including placing 83 rubbish bins in various strategic locations and putting up warning posters at road junctions and roundabouts as well as public toilets in Tawau.

Several anti-litterbug enforcement officers would also be stationed around the city to ensure the public observe the warnings.

Tawau Council is serious on tackling the issue of rubbish in Tawau. Individuals found discarding rubbish indiscriminately, including cigarette butts, would be brought to court and face a maximum fine of RM5,000.
Stickers also placed on taxis and buses to warn passengers that they could be fined for littering.
