Orang Cocos (Cocos Malay) Dancers in Tawau Cultural Festival 24-25 March 2007
Orang Cocos of Borneo live in Lahad Datu, Kunak, Sandakan and Tawau.
Originally migrated from Cocos Islands (Keeling Islands) of Australia in
1950s. There are 4000 Orang Cocos in Sabah with their home village in Kampung
Cocos near Lahad Datu in Tawau Division.
Their ancestors in Cocos Island worked in coconut plantations owned by the
English. And these early Cocoa Malay shown a remarkable flair in adapting
elements of the English-Scottish traditions into Cocos Malay cultural practices.
Certain foods, dances and musical influences have a western flavour.
