Lat
(Mohamed Nor Khalid)

Lat’s legacy lies in his ability to weave Malaysia’s multicultural tapestry into universal stories. From village tales to societal critiques, his art celebrates diversity, fostering national pride and global understanding. As both a cultural treasure and a global storyteller, Lat’s influence endures, proving that even the simplest sketches can transcend boundaries.

Early Life and Beginnings

Mohamed Nor Khalid, universally known as Lat, was born on March 5, 1951, in Kota Baru, a village in Perak, Malaysia. His artistic talent emerged early; by age nine, he was already contributing to his family’s income through his drawings. At just 13, his cartoons began appearing in publications like *Majallah Filem* and *Movie News*. While still in primary school, he published his first comic book, *Tiga Sekawan* (Three Friends), in 1964, earning RM25—a modest yet significant start for the young prodigy.

Rise to Prominence

Lat’s career flourished during his secondary school years. By 1968, his comic strips were serialized in major newspapers such as *Berita Minggu*, *Pemimpin*, and *Dewan Pelajar*. In 1974, he joined *The New Straits Times* as an editorial cartoonist, where his *Scenes of Malaysian Life* series catapulted him to national fame in the late 1970s. His relatable humor and keen observations of Malaysia’s multicultural society resonated deeply with readers.

Iconic Works and Achievements

Lat’s most celebrated work, *Kampung Boy* (1979), is a nostalgic memoir of rural Malaysian life. The graphic novel sold over 100,000 copies domestically, with its first print run of 60,000 copies selling out in four months. Translated into multiple languages, *Kampung Boy* introduced global audiences to Malaysia’s traditions, from the *Bersunat* (circumcision ceremony) to village camaraderie. Other notable works include *Town Boy*, *Mat Som*, and *With a Little Bit of Lat*, spanning genres from social satire to political commentary.

International Recognition

Lat’s influence transcended borders. In 1977, he participated in the U.S. International Visitors’ Program, touring America and engaging with global audiences. His 1998 Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship further cemented his role as a cultural ambassador, studying race relations in the U.S. His cartoons even adorned an AirAsia Boeing 737, symbolizing Malaysia’s national identity. Tony Fernandes, AirAsia’s CEO, praised Lat for capturing “the colorful lives and unique blend of our multi-racial society.”

Legacy and Honors

Lat’s contributions earned him Malaysia’s prestigious *Datuk* title in 1994. In 2007, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Anthropology and Sociology, recognizing his cultural impact. His characters—like the bespectacled “kampung boy” and Moira Hew, his schoolteacher immortalized in comics—remain beloved icons.

Personal Life and Philosophy

Lat resides in Ipoh with his wife and four children, maintaining a humble lifestyle despite his fame. Reflecting on his career, he once said, *“At 15 or 16, you don’t think about money or style... you just draw what you feel.”* This authenticity underpins his work, bridging generations and cultures through humor and heart.
