Sukau - a village by the Kinabatangan River
Sukau is located beside the lower Kinabatangan River, the longest river of
Borneo. The main reason for tourist to Sukau is to go cruising Kinabatangan
river to watch wildlife.

Sukau is a small village town with one primary school and few seperated shops.
The B&Bs are another 1 to 3Km on a gravel road.
This small Sukau village town has one primary school and few wooden shops.
From this end of the main road are several minibuses going to Lahad Datu and
Sandakan.

As in 2020, the above signboard is no more there. And the forest reservation behind the signboard is also deforested for village use.

Gomantong Caves
The caves is 20 Km before you arrive at Sukau Village.

Sukau Village Town is beside the river accessible by road. Sukau is the gateway
to the amazing nature of Kinabatangan River.
Left turn to a stony road to two B&B lodges which already stopped operation
since 2013 :

BAREFOOT SUKAU LODGE B&B 1 km

Sukau B&B is about 2.9 km from Sukau Village. Owner is Esri Masri
Shared bath at Rm30.00 per person with breakfast. Optional Lunch and Dinner RM25
per day.
Hiring a boat (plus guide) costs from RM70 to RM100 depending on destination.
Sukau Bed & Breakfast Guesthouse is the last guesthouse along the Sukau road;
the road ends here, beyond it the forest begins.

Road condition to Sukau
The road into Sukau has been upgraded from gravel to tar in 2008. Sukau is south
of Sandakan over a 40 Km long straight newly completed highways.
From Sandakan, take a drive for 2 hour to reach the village of Sukau . The last
1 hour driving is on a stretch of gravel road which is currently being tarred.
Kinabatangan river is Sabah longest river that flows 560km.
Sukau is one of the villages along the river accessible by road. This little
village is the gateway to the amazing nature of Lower Kinabatangan.
From Sandakan City, it is 2 hours drive to reach the village of Sukau . The last
few kilometers driving is on a stretch of gravel road. The main road is tarred.
