Plaza Merdeka

One of the most visible effects when a couple of big shopping malls opened in the suburbs of Kuching in recent years was that the old city core has turned quiet and rather devoid of people after dark. Most of the city's international hotels are located downtown, clustered near the Sarawak River around several smaller shopping centers and traditional shopping strips.

The Plaza Merdeka Mall fronts the historic Padang Merdeka and has the old Court House complex and the General Post Office, an old architectural icons of Kuching, for neighbors. It is possible now for visitors to soak in the old-world charm of Kuching, even perhaps staying the night at a new boutique, all-suites hotel called The Ranee along the Main Bazaar.

The shop house-front hotel along Kuching's oldest street attempts to recreate the romance and splendor of the period when a dynasty of three "White Rajahs" ruled Sarawak from 1841 to 1946. Architectural gems, such as the Square Tower, the Pavilion (now a textile museum) and, on the opposite bank of the river, the Astana and Fort Margherita, dot the vicinity.

Since Plaza Merdeka opened in December 2013, life return to down town Kuching. Several businesses have also recently located to India Street in anticipation of increased foot traffic of shoppers there. The covered canopy across the pedestrians India Street offer a seamless blend of the modern and traditional shopping experiences, in effect making the street an extension of Plaza Merdeka mall. An even more elaborate plan calls for the India Street pedestrian mall to be extended right across the Court House to Carpenter Street and for the Main Bazaar to be turned into a one-way street to make more room for expansive sidewalks along the Kuching Waterfront.

The Plaza Merdeka is located in the heart of Kuching city, only steps from the magnificent waterfront. Nearby is Chinatown with its quaint streets, numerous temples, the renowned Sarawak Museum, the old State Mosque , old shops and streets brimming with history and character.

The Shopping Mall boasts a gross area of over half a million sq ft with a nett lettable area of 350,000 sq ft. There are departmental store, supermarket, coffee shops as well as a food court .

Complementing the mall is a boutique business and tourist hotel. The hotel, situated above the mall have a panoramic view of Sarawak River, Astana, the DUN building and Fort Margherita on one side and the Padang Merdeka and Sarawak Museum on the other.

This modern, state-of-the-art shopping mall and hotel development within a classical building façade was designed by renowned Architect Yolanda David Reyes (YDR design, Manila Philippines).
In this historical district of Kuching City, Plaza Merdeka add life, vibrancy and excitement to this historical town.

Ample car parks spread over 6 acres is provided for on levels B2 & B3 with multiple access points to the mall. The ample parking will also serve to enhance the pedestrian flow of the surrounding vibrant retail streets.
