Booked quite early since many reviews from TripAdvisors advised us to do so in order to get a ticket to dive in Sipadan. Emails were replied with great details and manners, despite the fact that I asked a lot of questions. On the day of arrival in Tawau Airport, was picked up by a friendly driver, along with 2 other divers and headed to their office. The staffs there were very nice and welcoming, made sure I had the right package, and check out date, as well as renting a dive computer (as I did not notify them if I needed one or not). After payment, they also advised me to eat nearby, before heading on the speed boat to Pulau Mabul. We arrived Pulau Mabul safely - and this place looked really great. Divers were having fun on the jetty while getting their gears ready for their next dive, and we were welcomed by some of their staffs too. I stayed in the dorm - and surprisingly, the bathroom was really clean, and yes, take the advice on taking the lower bunk bed, as you will get your own fan and you don't have to climb up and down. All my dives (except diving in Sipadan) was just me and a DM/instructor - which I think it was great as it gave me more confidence to ask them how to improve my buoyancy, and the dives were relaxing and enjoyable. My Sipadan dive was with a buddy, and an instructor - Dionne - I could not forget to mention her as she was extremely fun to be diving with. Aside great diving atmosphere, they were also very conscious about the environment, where they do beach cleanup as well. My 3 favorite dive sites around P. Mabul has to be Ribbon Valley (green turtles, lots of nudibranchs, ribbon eel), Awas, which is just nearby our jetty (frogfish, hermit crabs, 2 massive turtles), and Artificial Reef (blue dragon nudibranch, baby razorfish, harlequin sweetlips). Oh, and one of my favorite thing about them was they have a detailed booklet of different kinds of marine species you can see and their names written clearly under each of the photos (They also put up species according to their sexes too.)
Room Tip: Pick a lower bunk bed if you are staying in the dorm! :)

Perfectly organized in a place where everything else is a mess. Friendly and professional at the same time, we had very special days with them. Good food, the best internet wifi in the island and a beautiful roof where you can relax and chat after a hard diving-day! Number one!
Room Tip: Bungalows are all surrounded by a beautiful jungle-garden

“Great resort, shame about the beach”

We had a private villa here and the accommodation was fine but not great. They include meals and the food was pretty good considering it was a buffet, always plenty of choice. It's located right on the beach which would normally have been a huge draw card but the beach is so polluted that it's not inviting to swim in. It's a great place for diving/snorkelling but I wouldn't factor in any "beach days", there was just too much rubbish. The sea life and coral are fantastic - I only snorkelled and still saw lots of fish, turtles, eels, stingrays etc... some of the staff were fantastic.

“Fantastic island resort for diver”
5 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 weeks ago
I stayed here 6 days, and did my AOW and Enrich Air courses, one day sipadan.
SJ resort is excellent for diver. There have comfortable room and serve tasty meals.
Dive Instructor and DM here all professional and friendly, when i having any problem during my AOW and Enrich Air courses, they answer very detailed and clearly make sure i understand. If you want to take courses, i recommend come to SJ, environment here is good for learning and practice.
SJ doing lot of work to protect Mabul island, their selfless action deserve the award. Take a look about their project if you are free, you will impress.
I stayed in Deluxe A/C Room, simply and comfortable, cos i come here for dive~ not expect the 5 stars quality~ You have to bring your own shower gel and shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, (if you don't, you can buy those thing in there shop next to the restaurant), they have one big tower for you, you can pay $20 rent one more, but i suggest you bring your own middle size tower too. Shower water not running well, quite weak, desalination system brings water to this small island, so water is precious in here, i guess that's why the shower is so weak, well i just get use to it~ Deluxe A/C room have aircon, ceiling fan, and the other one fan here! so you won't feel hot when you stay at room~ Sleep at night have to close my washroom door to keep quiet, cos island have broadcast at middle of night.. and i was wearing mosquitout bracelet with me, keep mosquito stay away fm me!! Suggest bring Mosquitout bracelet! seriously! Before you go mabul, do more research, know what you have to bring to, cos you have to take card by yourself~ you are the one who know what you need.
Food won't disappoint you, i love the chicken and beef, also the vegetable, taste very good, stay 6 days only repeat a few type of dishes. Resort bring many bottle of pure distilled water to island for everyone, or u can buy a bottle of water and keep it in ur room.
Wreck dive was fun and beautiful,
night dive i felt kind of adventure when i saw hundred of sea urchin surrounding me.. at dark night..haha..
i saw 4-5 green turtles (2 are really big!) and 1 Hawksbill when i dive just around mabul, truly turtle hometown here.
Sipadan! Heaven! You MUST have to come there one time in your life!!
Thanks Scuba Junkie, always give the best to us. Big thumb up LIKE!
“excellent diving school, reasonable accommodation”

Diving instructors were great, Mark helped us through our theory padi course, Danielle was our experienced (and patient) instructor who taught the practical part to just the 2 of us which enabled us to complete the course. The beach and water around island has rubbish in the sea so not great for sunbathing or normal swimming but you can see quite a lot of fish whilst snorkeling off the jetty. Accommodation was reasonable in the individual chdlrts, air con and lots of space but needs some refurbishment. Food was plentiful re main course but only desert was fruit and that often ran out. The locals who worked in the kitchen were really friendly and helpful. Constant supply of tea /coffee and cake mid morning and afternoon. Nice area to chill out in the evening with a bar. Wifi only in dining room and bar.

My fiance and I visited for 2 nights. We stayed in a double room and we did 3 fun dives while we were here. Mabul is absolutely gorgeous. As people have mentioned the litter is a shame but it didn't detract from the wonderful warm clear sea and amazing views from lovely Mabul. We had a great day diving and met some lovely people. I haven't dived much and was really nice to be in a small dive group (between 2 and 4 of us with a dive master). Our drive master spent time with us after identify everything we had seen on the dives. The rooms were adequate and same for the food, I imagine would get a bit repetitive but was perfect for a couple of days. Would definitely return, although will have to come for longer next time so we can dive Sipadan - so frustrating to be so close (you can see it!) But not be able to dive there! Lovely few days break though - loved it :-)

“Very good dive centee”

Good rooms, a nice beach and excellent diving. Sipadan was really special with lots of sharks, octopus, turtles, big schools of fish etc.
Amanda who took us to Sipadan was really friendly and explained everything really well. The dive centre makes sure you do your buddy checks properly which I like as it makes you feel safer.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 was that some of the staff could be friendlier and there could be music and some better drinks (wine by the glass, cocktails etc.) in the bar upstairs.
We were a bit worried about the safety before we went but felt really safe the whole time we were there and wouldn't hesitate to go back.

The Scuba junkie is a very professional diving school with the best divemasters Ive ever seen! Thank u for the big and awesome adventure!
The resort is beautiful but there is one big issue!!!
There is a village exact 50 m far away from the resort and its more like a slum than a village. Kids running around without clothes and dirt and rubbish had bern everywhere. And all the people who went for dive has been happy and just passed the village. I wanted to stay longer but after one day I couldn't stand this big differences anymore so I decide to leave. The situation wasn't fair...
“Reasonable price, good diveshop. ”

Nice experience with ScubaJunkie. DM are so nice. Even though Mabul is not a good place to dive- polluted water you can see garbage over the water. Visibility was not good- max. 5 M. But our DM ,Cat, tried her best to find small things for us. Like the Bubble Coral Shrimp! She is a very responsible DM!
Their beach is also quiet & clean. We saw turtle during night time.

“Gem on Mabul Island”
4 of 5 bubblesReviewed yesterday NEW via mobile
I didn't plan to stay here but I ended up here for one night on 23 October recently as I was very disappointed with the lodge I stayed on the other side of Mabul island.
This resort is one of the few on the island that has got beach front. Most of the resorts on the island especially on the west side were built on stilts.
Just like other resorts on this island, this resort served as a base for divers to go to Sipadan. The resort has a beachfront but people don't swim there as there are always boats docking or coming in & out to transport people to Sipadan or nearby islands.
I didn't expect the room to be spacious and it was reasonably clean. I had no issue about cleanliness here.
Majority of the guests were foreigners and I guessed quite a number of them were Australians. The dinner and breakfast were mostly catered to their taste buds. I was okay with it as I was looking for something different too.
If I ever come back to Mabul Island again, Scuba Junkie would always be my choice.

i just spend 4 days with scuba Junkie and i have only compliments for them.
my experience with scuba Junkie started when i enquire and mailed to 4 diffrent dive clubs in mabul. they answered quickly and respond to all my questions plus their offer was better than the rest. i went for 3 days (9 dives) in mabul island area. first day it was me + instructor + dive master. day after just me and dive master and the last day only 3 people. you get small group and a really personal treatment. the staff was really nice ( everybody Speak good english) and helped with everything u need. for me the food was good altough its not that special but its certainly good quality. i couldnt get permits to sipadan but the sites near to mabul and kapalei was awsome and i had the best dives ever ! this is a perfect place for people who love diving and snorkling.
