Universiti Utara Malaysia is known as the management university with specific
mission of providing a leadership role in management education in Malaysia.
UUM has among the largest grouping of Human Resource Management (HRM) academics
in Asia. These academics are based in the HRM department of the Faculty of Human
and Social Development, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). They comprise seasoned
experts from the private and public sectors as well as pure academics of UUMs
human resource development (HRD) programme since 1990. UUM has been designated
by the government as a specialized management university.

Universiti Utara Malaysia (Northern University of Malaysia - UUM) is a public
university in the town of Sintok, Kedah. Incorporated on 16 February 1984.
The university was established with the specific mission of providing a
leadership role for management education in Malaysia and known as a management
university.
The academic establishments in UUM include :
College of Business (UUM COB),
College of Law, Government and International Studies (UUM COLGIS)
College of Arts and Sciences (UUM CAS).
UUM is the first university in Malaysia to be a fully wired using fiber-optic
cables.
The university has 29 computer laboratories in academic and administrative
buildings on the campus, providing students with access points for e-services.
The University seeks to reflect this in the design of its various academic
curricula, focusing on disciplines such as Management, Accountancy, Economics,
Information Technology (IT), Entrepreneurial Development, Tourism Management,
Banking and Finance, Social Development, Human Resources Development, and
International Affairs Management.
UUM is also the catalyst for the growth of the northern region of Peninsular
Malaysia. Its involvement in various community projects provides the impetus for
socio-economic development of the region,
The University has developed and grown both physically and academically since
its inception, and is currently offering 45 undergraduate programmes and 38
graduate programmes. UUM is the first university in the nation to be a
fully-wired university using fiber-optic cables,
Although relatively young in terms of age, the university has made significant
inroads in the fields of IT and quality management. Recent accomplishments
include the accordance of the MSC status, which makes it the first public
university and also the first that is located outside the Multimedia Super
Corridor to be bestowed this honor, while the ISO 9002 Certification for the
Library marks another milestone in UUM's journey towards becoming a world class
institution.
Programme Outline
The programmes offered at Universiti Utara Malaysia UUM are conducted through
the various faculties, namely, the Faculty of Accountancy; Faculty of Business
Management; Faculty of Cognitive Science and Education; Faculty of Economics;
Faculty of Finance and Banking; Faculty of Communication and Modern Languages;
Faculty of Information Technology; Faculty of International Studies. Faculty of
Public Management 8c Law; Faculty of Quantitative Science; Faculty of Social
Development and Humanities; Faculty of Tourism Management, Hospitality and
Environment;Faculty of Technology Management; and The Executive Development
Centre.
Academic Strengths
Universiti Utara Malaysia UUM employs the semester academic system, in
which a student will only obtain a degree qualification upon the successful
completion of six semesters of study. In the final semester, the student is
required to have obtained at least a 2.00 PMK to be awarded a degree. Those who
fail to meet this requirement will be allowed another two semesters of study
The objective of UUM is to develop and improve the quality of management
studies, to be referred to as the hub or centre in all management aspects, and
to become the pioneer and most outstanding resource centre in the field of
management.

Facilities
IS09002 Certified Library - this library utilizes a fully computerized
system that is also known as the Library Information Technology Automated
System. It hosts a large collection of books that includes audio visual
facilities, journals, as well as an extensive series of publications that are
primarily concerned with management.
Computer and Multimedia Lab equipped with email facilities, Sports Complex
(badminton court, squash', gym, tennis, swimming etc.)

Student Health Centre, which provides health services that encompass medical,
dentistry, counselling, emergency treatment, surgery and pharmacy for all
full-time students. In addition, the centre also conducts seminars, health
campaigns, annual heath and fitness tests for the staff as well as health
services to the local community.

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) also offers two undergraduate programmes

Student Services and Activities
Universiti Utara Malaysia UUM Campus is a self-contained community
availing many facilities and amenities for its students to enjoy various
activities in a safe, comfortable and conducive learning environment.
A variety of student organizations, recreational activities and cultural events
contribute to a well- balanced university experience.
Residential Colleges
The University provides accommodation at its residential colleges to all its
students, including a hostel for married students. Every residential college is
equipped with the necessary basic facilities and services for convenient living
on campus.
University Mall
Located within the Campus, the mall comprises a mini-market, two banks, a
restaurant, a post-office, a cooperative bookstore, and about 20 small business
enterprises - all managed by the students which provide a wide range of
amenities like a travel agency, bakery and computer services.
University Mosque
The Sultan Badlishah Mosque can accommodate up to 5,000 people for prayer
purposes. The Mosque is also equipped with a mini library, computer laboratory,
as well as study and seminar rooms.
Financial Aid
A number of grants for full-time research in MSc (IT) and Ph.D (IT) programmes
are offered with the cooperation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and
Environment. UUM Financial Aid Schemes are also available for full-time
students, loans also available from private financial institutions.
Achievements
Universiti Utara Malaysia UUM became the first Public University in
Malaysia to be granted the MSC status in 1999 and the MS-ISO 9002 in 2002. It
also won the Best National Landscape Award and MSC Status in 2001 and several
Innovation Awards.
Recreational Facilities
The Sports Complex is well-equipped with an Olympic-sized swimming pool,
a mini stadium, an archery range, a badminton hall, a gymnasium, tennis, squash,
basketball and volleyball courts, rugby, hockey, softball, handball and football
fields and a nine-hole golf course. The Sports Complex is used frequently by
external institutions for their sporting events. Other recreational facilities
such as canoeing, jogging, bicycling, jungle trekking and camping are also
available for the students, staff and public.
