In order to preach Christianity to the Sin-On Hakka people in Guangzhou, south of China, the German and Swish speaking missionaries from Switzerland made systematic academic approach to learn the Hakka Language.  My grandparents villages were the missionary jurisdiction. The Hakka dialect they learn is also the dialect of my our family tongue.

This "A Grammar and Lexicon of Hakka" was a significant works of the missionaries during the time of my grandparents when thy were youth in China. We are Sin-On Hakka.

Following extracted from : https://inalco.hal.science/hal-01386151

"...... This volume presents the first English edition of a Hakka Grammar and Lexicon, originally compiled by Basel missionaries who lived and worked in Guangdong province, China, during the second half of the 19th century. The Kleine Hakka-Grammatik (1909) is in fact the earliest known grammar of a Hakka dialect, while the Kleines Deutsch-Hakka Wörterbuch für Anfänger (1909) is an abridged version of a larger dictionary manuscript in circulation, acknowledged by Donald MacIver to be the basis for his classic 1926 Hakka-English dictionary. Both works reflect the Sin-on 新安 variety of Hakka spoken some one hundred years ago in the Hong Kong area. ....."

Photo of the missionary School in Long Heu Village between 1901 -1903. Phang Len Yin, my grandmother, was 12-14 years old in those years and might be among one of the elder girls in above photos.

Phang Len Yin, studied in this missionary school when she was young in China. She mentioned to me a few times about "German Missionary" Reverent. The German missionary in this photo is "Reverent Lok-Yun".

這張全家照是祖母全家及大兒子全家兩家人

二戰日本佔領婆羅洲前1940年間在珊瑚Studio, Jesselton(今Kota Kinabalu)相館拍的照片.

A Chinese Syllabary Pronounced according to the Dialect of Sin-On Hakka
Hand copied by Wong Shin Chiang 黃承青 1887-1939

It was in 1965/1966 that one day Phang Lien Yin, my grandma opened took a small but thick booklet to show me. I remember pieces of what she said to me "......your Ah Kung (Grandfather) copy by hand..........copy little by little......good handwriting......using Roman's Words to pronouns Hakka...........German Priest..............."

I never seen this book again and didn't know where about till 2009, 40 years later, Christopher Wong, my brother forward to me from Australia an image of a hand copied Hakka dictionary which he happen to discovered in a relative's home. Yes. This is the one I saw. This historical relic found its way to  Australia with the the family members migrating to Perth.

That book was a glossary of Hakka words with Chinese characters follow by English alphabet to pronounce it. The whole book was hand written in neat hand writing. In those day printed books were few and expensive. Copying a book is common in those. (A late as my secondary days in the 1966-1970, we spend a lot of class period copying note from blackboard)
