Bundu Tuhan is not one village but several, spread across a green valley on the southern foothills of Mount Kinabalu, all known by one name. Villages such as Sokid Bundu Tuhan, Siba Bundu Tuhan and Himbaan sit on the ridges and slopes, with houses among vegetable plots, fruit trees and forest. It is the village closest to the gate of Kinabalu Park, about two hours by road from Kota Kinabalu.

What the name means名字的意思Maksud nama

In Dusun, bundu is a tall fruit tree (in Malay, belunu), and tuhan comes from notuhan, “fallen”. Bundu Tuhan means “the bundu tree that fell”, from an old story of a landslide. It has nothing to do with the Malay word tuhan, “God”.

In 1851 two Dusun men, Gunting Lagadan of Bundu Tuhan and Lemaing of Kampung Kiau, guided Hugh Low, then Colonial Secretary of Labuan, on the first recorded climb of Mount Kinabalu: a party of 42 that took nine days to reach the summit plateau. Gunting is remembered as the park’s first registered guide, a mountain hut carries his name, and in 2015 Sabah Parks announced signs on the summit trail to honour both men.

About 3,200 people live in Bundu Tuhan. They are Dusun, and the hills and forest around them are their ancestral land. Once followers of the traditional religion, most villagers are now Christian; on Christmas Day the children walk to church in their best clothes. The village is run through its own institutions as well as the government’s: a board of customary elders, community meetings, and committees for forests and rivers, the village fund, housing and tourism.

Families farm small plots on the slopes — highland vegetables, fruit and flowers — and sell at farm stalls, including the Gerai Sayur Bundu Tuhan at the village entrance. Shifting cultivation has given way to fixed farms. Because the park gate is next door, many villagers work as park rangers, mountain guides and porters, and homestays along the ridges sell the morning view of Kinabalu.

The forest is a larder too. Under the village’s bombon rules people collect wild mushrooms, wild durians, rattan and kobuh leaves; a village elder called the forest their “open supermarket”. The DumoWongi group trains Dusun women in natural farming and crafts.

For the Dusun, the hills and forests around Kinabalu are sacred and bound up with the spirits of the ancestors. When foreign tourists posed naked on the summit shortly before the June 2015 earthquake, many Dusun saw the quake as the mountain’s anger, and a cleansing ceremony was held for the mountain afterwards.

At 7.15 am on 5 June 2015 a magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the slopes of Kinabalu. In the days after, a Bundu Tuhan man told reporters, “I will never forget the moment I felt the ground shake”; Kundasang counted more than 50 aftershocks, and people slept little. Heavy rain then sent mud floods down Sungai Mesilau and other rivers, villagers in Kundasang and Kiau were moved to halls, and water supplies were cut when debris clogged the treatment dam.

Whose forest? Hutan WinokokHutan siapa? Hutan Winokok

The 760-hectare Hutan Winokok lies where the village’s Native Reserve overlaps the Tinompok Forest Reserve, gazetted as a Class 1 (totally protected) reserve in 1984. In 2021 a villagers’ committee asked for it to be excised and handed to the community as a conservation area, saying they have protected it for decades through bombon. The Sabah Forestry Department replied that the forest would stay a Class 1 reserve, offering the community special rights instead, and the matter was passed to the state’s Natural Resources Office.
